Practical Applications of Statistics in the Social SciencesResearch Question 4: Full time education

Bivariate analysis

In this section, you'll learn how use crosstabs and chi square tests to analyze the relationships between two variables.

In this section, we are interested in finding out what factors influence YCS survey respondents' enrolment in full time education. We're investigating this by using s2q10, a categorical variable in our dataset that measures full time educational enrolment. S2q10 is our dependent (or outcome) variable, and we can use bivariate analysis to explore its relationship with various independent (or explanatory) variables.

We can use SPSS to compare education enrolment between different groups of respondents, and then to test the statistical significance of these differences. A comparison of enrolment in full time education can be done using the Crosstabs function. We can test the significance of any differences in full time educational enrolment by using the Chi Square function.
