The Politics of Heathcare

Published: 14 January 2010

Dr Bona Muzaka was an invited speaker at the International Conference on Healthcare and Trade, organised by the Erasmus Observatory on Health Law, at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in The Netherlands on 10-11 December 2009.

The Observatory organises annual conferences on issues related to healthcare, and the 2009 conference had a particular focus on trade, including issues such as trade in health insurance services, pharmaceutical competition law and intellectual property rights.

Dr Muzaka’s conference paper related to the impact of the preferential regional and bilateral trade agreements on access to medicines and public health in developing countries party to these agreements. Given the wide scope of the conference, and it’s particularly significance given the increasing complexities and controversies associated with healthcare provision, it attracted scholars and practitioners from law, politics, economics, international organisations, government healthcare agencies and NGOs.
