Who we are

Our students experience a curriculum informed by current events and global trends as well as through pioneering research on real-world developments undertaken here in the department of Politics and International Relations.

From your first day, our programmes focus on equipping you with the research skills needed to engage with, and intervene in, the world we live in; to use evidence and data to analyse of political actions and events; to offer critical assessments of those decisions, and to imagine alternatives. We pride ourselves on our graduates being among the most skilled in the UK.

We are an innovative, diverse and stimulating community, known around the world for dynamic and critical research on today’s global challenges on topics ranging from the rise of China to the governing of drone warfare; the analysis of populism to innovations in democracy; sustainable development to managing refugee crises. You will learn to use a variety of ideas, evidence and data to analyse politics and policymaking and offer critical assessments of the decisions of politicians, experts and activists.

We are part of the University of Southampton, a leading research-intensive Russell Group University, ranked in the top 100 worldwide Universities by the QS World University Rankings 2020. Our world–class academic staff provide our students with the highest level of tuition and support throughout their studies across the University’s Highfield Campus. We are proud that our students go on to have successful careers in a range of positions in the public and private sectors including government departments, think tanks, security analysis, political and financial marketing, campaign organisations and NGOs. Our current alumni work in diverse roles including political representatives, political advisors and senior civil servants in government, risk and data analysts, entrepreneurs managing start-ups in the private sector and campaign and project managers directing NGO work in the third sector.
