Explore the world, change the world, improve the world
At Southampton we are proud of our reputation as one of the top departments for geographical scholarship in the UK. We are one of a few universities that still offers a choice between BA and BSc Geography, giving our students the chance to fully experience geography and what the subject can lead to after university.
Accredited courses
-
Both of our undergraduate courses are accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), which has recognised Southampton as a high quality centre for teaching geography. The accreditation gives prospective geography students a way to check whether their chosen university delivers the knowledge, skills and other attributes that are expected of high quality geography graduates.
Flexible learning
-
Year one provides students with a grounding in both human and physical geography with the opportunity to acquire geographical skills. After year one, students will specialise either in human or physical geography, with options within both streams to adapt their programme to suit their interests. We don’t leave our students to work out flexible learning for themselves - throughout their degree, each student will work with their Personal Academic Tutor to customise their pathway.
Explore the world
-
We know that our geography students come to Southampton not just to learn on campus, but to explore the world and practise their learning in action. We offer exciting and heavily subsidised field trip opportunities throughout each degree as well as a compulsory field trip in year two which is included in course fees. For BA Geography the compulsory trip has recently been to Amsterdam, with optional year three trips to locations such as Berlin and Cambodia. For BSc Geography the compulsory trip has recently been to Tenerife, followed by optional trips to places including Arolla in Switzerland and the Picos de Europa mountains of northern Spain.
Hands-on support
-
Southampton geography students are taught by internationally recognised experts, with 100 per cent of our research outputs rated world leading or internationally excellent. This is reflected in the research environment we provide our students (REF, 2014). Students benefit from small-group teaching and one-to-one supervision with these experts throughout their degrees to ensure that they always have quality academic support and someone they know they can go to with questions.
Employability
-
Our employability program starts on day one with workshops, seminars, clinics and career fairs. Students can choose to undertake a year in industry as well as taking advantage of international exchange opportunities in Europe, Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. Southampton stands out from the crowd because our courses focus on the application of geographical techniques and technologies to real-world challenges, setting students up for life after university. We have established working relationships with international organisations such as the World Bank, UNESCO, NASA, and the European Space Agency, as well as national bodies such as the Environment Agency, National Parks, and city councils.
