Research Lifecycle

The research lifecycle covers everything from the conception of a research idea through securing funding for it, building the team, partnerships or collaborators who will work on it with you, taking the project to completion and then beyond communication and dissemination to impact.  

The research lifecycle – with attending strategies and processes – applies as much to a small research project (for instance a fellowship) as well as major programmes of investment (such as the Global Challenges Research Fund).

Our Research and Innovation Services (RIS) have a Doctoral and Early Career Researcher’s Hub that contains information on:  Funding, Research Integrity and Ethics, Data Management and IP, Researchfish and the REF.

The National Centre for Research Methods, which is based at the University of Southampton, runs a year-round programme of training courses and has a large library of free online resources on every stage in the research lifecycle.

Open Access and Research Data Management affect all researchers.

The Library provides guidance and support to staff, researchers and students at the University of Southampton on Research Data Management  The website covers: Planning, Working with your Data, Storing, Sharing, Policies, Support, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  Plus, there is advice on ‘what is data management.’ 

The Library offer a range of training and advice – (please note that this is for research staff, early career and doctoral researchers).
