An art exhibition entitled 'Lost in Transit: Finding Gendered Journeys Through Art and Technology' was recently held in Southampton during July and August, exploring the themes of gender and mobility through various art media.

The event was curated by Close the Data Gap, a working group aimed at creating an equitable future for all by closing the gender data gap that currently exists in transport research, and formed part of a WSI Stimulus funded project, ‘Gender, Safety & Mobility: Advocating for Change through Arts and Web Science’, led by Professor Pauline Leonard with Dr Kirsten Madeira-Revell, Dr Fatma Zileli (Selin), Rachel Hayward, Joy McKay, and Kiome Pope.

A number of submissions to the exhibit addressed topics such as Safety while travelling, Harassment, Use of technology, Technology failures, Abandonment of the rail system, Doing make-up with a total of 28 pieces submitted.

Rachel Hayward, a Post Graduate Researcher in Human Centred AI and currently working on her PhD research project, 'the intersection between gender, technology, and safety for active travel' said of the event, “It was a fantastic event to be part of and the team are really happy with the outcome. It has enabled us to raise awareness of the work of Close the Data Gap and to garner insights from those who contributed and came to visit the exhibition. We have also been able to develop potential future outreach opportunities at local schools".
