What do you do?

I work in engineering consultancy services.

What's the best part of your job?

I'm able to work in the Rolls-Royce–Alstom Joint Technology Project, which has enabled me to learn the technologies of two world-class companies. The project aims to develop the world's largest power generation gas turbine.

Why did you go into this career?

The life of a mechanical engineer is challenging and rewarding. In my career so far, I have been involved in the development of the world largest power generation gas turbine, vacuum pumps that run up to more than 10 times the speed of a car engine (90,000 rpm), and helping solve problems for the one of the world's largest computer hard disk drive manufacturers. This career offers many travel opportunities, including travelling to various parts of Europe, China, India and Malaysia to work with customers, suppliers and colleagues.

What is your education/experience:

Up to age of 16: Malaysia Chinese Independent Schools Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and Malaysia Education Certificate (SPM) O level equivalent. After 16: Prime College Diploma (PCD), Malaysia

What was your first job?

Mechanical Integrity Engineer with Alstom Power.

Why did you choose Southampton?

I chose the University of Southampton because it has an excellent international reputation for its mechanical engineering degree course.

What was the best part about studying at Southampton?

I was impressed by its excellent teaching and research staff, who were very helpful and resourceful. The world-class research experience I gained from the University has helped me tremendously in my engineering career.

What is your advice to potential students?

Having the opportunity of higher education in a world-class university like Southampton has transformed my life. Be ready to take on the challenge as an engineer and take your first step to a fulfilling career.

What are your hobbies?

Travelling, badminton, reading.
