Glue ear or otitis media with effusion (OME) is one of the most common conditions of childhood. It is generally accepted that for most children, transient OME has only a minimal effect on development. However the risk to development may be greater for children with OME and hearing loss which persists over time, particularly if coupled with other risks to development such as intellectual disabilities. This talk will present results from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children and a Wellcome Trust funded study on hearing and language development in children with Down Syndrome. The clinical implications of the findings and current research on management will be discussed.

Dr Amanda Hall, University of Bristol. Dr Amanda Hall is a Clinical Scientist at St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol specialising in paediatric audiology. She is also Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Social Medicine, University of Bristol. Amanda’s research interests include child development, hearing loss and shared decision making. She has worked extensively with the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children and is the ENT & Audiology Specialty Lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network: West of England
