Remote Photoplethysmography Seminar

Photoplethysmography (PPG) developed by Alrick Hertzman in 1938 to monitor blood flow under human skin has widely been used in health monitoring wristbands.

According to a recent survey, about 35% of adults in the USA are using health monitoring wristbands indicating that PPG is becoming an accepted and mature technology.

This talk will review the science of PPG, discuss the challenges of extracting PPG signals remotely without skin contact – remote PPG and present preliminary results from our laboratory.

Remote PPG (rPPG) is a technology to extract blood flow information under the skin from video of the skin taken remotely from up to 10 meters away. The extremely low signal-to-noise ratios present many interesting and challenging research questions of which most of them remain to be solved.

Benefits of deep learning will be discussed with the issues of explainability. If rPPG can emerge with sounded solutions, its benefit will be widespread.
