with expertise in nutrition, immunology, cardiovascular science, biochemistry, biological science, chemistry and materials science.
They join a list (of 3,200) of the world’s most
highly cited researchers
across 21 broad fields of study based on data from Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science and InCites platforms over the last 11 years to determine who has published the highest impact work most frequently acknowledged by peers around the world.
Within the prestigious Russell Group of UK universities, Southampton has the fifth highest number of researchers featured on the list behind only Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and University College London.
The Southampton researchers featured amongst ‘The Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014’ are:
Dr Graham Burdge
– Human Nutrition
Professor Philip Calder
– Nutritional Immunology
Professor Cyrus Cooper

According to Thomson-Reuters, “everyone acknowledged in the list is a person of influence in the sciences and social sciences. It is precisely this type of recognition - recognition by peers in the form of citations - that makes their status meaningful. They are the people who are on the cutting edge of their fields . . . performing and publishing work that their peers recognize as vital to the advancement of their science.”
“These individuals are influencing the future direction of thinking both within and between their disciplines. These rankings confirm that Southampton academics are having a real impact in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges in health, medicine, and technology. It is a further reminder of what a privilege it is to be working with world-leading scholars at the University of Southampton,” said University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Don Nutbeam.
