Sustainable bioenergy at The Houses of Parliament
Southampton researchers funded by RCUK and the Energy Technologies Institute were invited this week to exhibit their findings at a special event hosted by Lord Deben, Chair of the Committee on Climate Change, “Working together towards a low carbon future”.
Professor Gail Taylor and PhD students Zoe Harris and Mike Allwright discussed their research on developing low carbon energy using poplar and willow trees as feedstock. Zoe, who has been funded by ETI for three years to measure the greenhouse gas balance of land use transitions to bioenergy cropping showed a short film of her willow field in Sussex being harvested whilst Mike was able to engage with politicians on his molecular research, funded by BBSRC, to identify genes underlying improved tree growth. Approximately 200 people attended the event.
