Equality objectives and reporting

University Council is accountable for the University's equality and diversity objectives and receives annual reports on our progress against those objectives. Our objectives are designed to enhance equality, diversity and inclusion across the University, and reflect the wide-range of work we undertake in this area.

Our objectives

The Public Sector Equality Duty, as revised and implemented in 2011, requires the University to publish its objectives in relation to its duties under the Equality Act 2010. Progress against our objectives is reviewed on an annual basis by the Equality and Diversity Advisory Committee and reported to Council, with recommendations of new objectives for the coming year. Previous Council reports can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Our objectives for 2016/17 are:

Our strategy

Following the conclusion of the University's Equality Plan 2010-2013, work has being undertaken to ensure that equality and diversity is embedded throughout the University Strategy. As the Strategic Plans are developed to progress the strategy, we will work to ensure that they engender greater inclusivity and recognition of our diverse community.

Equality objectives will continue to be formulated to ensure that the aims of the University Strategy are achieved in a way that includes all individuals: staff, students and visitors from all backgrounds.

Regular reporting of actions and activities against our objectives (above) is managed through quarterly meetings of the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee, an advisory group to the University Executive Group, chaired by Sie Christopher Snowden as University Diversity Champion. This committee is supported by the Equality Diversity  and Inclusion Commitee Group, which includes members from all faculties, the professional services, the Students' Union, staff unions and other members of the University with an interest in equality and diversity.

Reporting and accountability

Listed below are the annual diversity reports that have been presented to University Council since 2008. Each report summarises the objectives for the previous year, reviews the progress made against those objectives, and recommends a new set of objectives for the coming year. They also include a summary of the demographics of the University community.
