The School of Geography and Environmental Science has dedicated IT facilities to support work in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and to support intense computational tasks analysing research data.
The David Robins GIS Suite
This is a new, specially designed teaching space for our master’s programme students undertaking specialist GIS/Remote sensing tasks.
The Suite is also used for the Continued Professional Development courses offered by Geodata.
The High Specification Research Computing Facility
This space houses machines for research and specialist teaching support, consisting of:
- A specialist high end workstation which can be utilised to support highly intensive computational tasks, such as structure from motion (SfM) processing, image processing and point cloud manipulation that cannot be completed using the Iridis environment or using standard S2 specification machines.
- S2 research grade machines to support intensive computational tasks that cannot be completed using the Iridis environment, or using standard specification machines.
- An iMac machine to support cartographic and illustrative work for a wide range of research projects, but which also provides a Unix environment where needed.
