Research

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), 87% of our research was ranked as world-leading and internationally excellent.

Studying at Southampton, you’ll be assessed on your abilities to analyse and write history. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is how we as historians get assessed—and we’re proud to say that we’re ranked third in the country for the quality of our history scholarship. This means that you’ll be taught by experts in the field, with our world-class research forming the core of the curriculum you will study.

During lectures, seminars and informal contact time with us, you will have access to the primary sources we are using to write these cutting-edge histories, as well as benefiting from the latest books, databases, and journals acquired to conduct our research, which make it into our libraries for you to use for your own work.

Joining the debate

Our seminars are open to academics, students and the general public.

Breaking new ground

Our research centres focus on a range of themes, from Imperial and Post-Colonial study to historical records of Southampton.
