Associate Professor in Roman Studies

Dr Louise Revell is an Associate Professor in History at the University of Southampton.

My primary interest is in the impact of Rome on the provincial communities of the western empire. This arose from my doctoral work on public buildings in Spain and Britain, published as Roman imperialism and local identities (Cambridge University Press). I have since moved on to consider questions of social identity within the Roman provinces, including ethnicity, age and gender. I work more broadly on buildings (domestic and public) and Latin inscriptions. I currently hold a Getty Fellowship as part of the Arts of Rome's Provinces workshop.

Research interests

My research interests include the relationship between identity, ideology and imperialism, and their expression through material culture. My work on buildings concentrates on social space as a way of understanding questions of integration and social differentiation. Recent research projects have looked at Roman imperialism in the Spanish provinces and Britain. My book Roman imperialism and local identities explores the relationship between Roman identities and daily practice as experienced through public architecture in the provinces. I have also worked on the fora of Roman Britain and military bath-houses. Other research has explored gender, family and the life-course within the western provinces.
