Introducing your degree

Our four year Integrated PhD in Biomedical Science - Stem Cell Science degree as been designed to produce the next generation of leaders in stem cell research, one of the major research strengths of the University of Southampton. The PhD degree programme provides broad training in the intellectual and practical basis of scientific research as well as a focused individual research experience. The combination of a choice of laboratory rotations and a three year project offers an enhanced student experience to better prepare you for a career in scientific research.

All Integrated PhD Pathways Studentships will be advertised on www.findaphd.com and interviews will take place in the New Year.

Applicants invited to interview will be asked to give a short presentation as part of the selection process.

Duration

Four years full time.

An intermediate award of MRes is made after successful completion of the first year.

Typical entry requirements

An upper second-class Honours degree (or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University).

Selection process

English language: IELTS 7.0 or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University is required for speakers of other languages.

Typical course content

Studying high-quality basic science, delivered in a clinically relevant way, will enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a career in academia, health, industry and other related sectors.

Our research themes include stem cells, human development and regenerative medicine - with a strong interface between life sciences and physical sciences.  On this pathway you will gain a deep understanding of translational stem cell biology, and critically, learn to communicate effectively with biologists, clinicians, bioengineers and physical scientists through exposure to the life sciences interface. 

Research Skills for Biomedical Sciences

This module aims to provide you with a learning environment in which you can gain an understanding of the true philosophy of research from initial ideas to the application of the findings. We will be using a variety of learning and teaching methods that we hope you will find stimulating and helpful.

On completion of this module you should have gained a sound understanding of statistics and be able to develop a hypothesis as well as plan a research project.  

Cell Biology

All students on the Integrated PhD Programme will take the Cell Biology module. The module aims to provide you with an understanding of molecular cell biology and mechanisms of regulation and adaptation; to develop your skills in critical appraisal of previously published research; and to enhance your oral skills required for the presentation and interpretation of data. You will be assessed by journal review, presentation and contribution to discussions.

Stem Cell Biology

Students on the Stem Cells pathway take the Stem Cell Biology module. The pathway aims to provide you with an understanding of stem cell biology including embryonic, fetal and adult stem cells and their application for regenerative medicine; to develop your skills in critical appraisal of previously published research; and to enhance your oral skills required for the presentation and interpretation of data.
