Dr Sargent Bray is Research Scientist within Ocean and Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton at the University of Southampton.

My research background includes analysis of organic matter from sediments, coal, rocks, oils, biomass, aerosols, and waters. This involves different methods of physical and chemical separation of complex mixtures of organic matter and analysis using gas chromatography - mass spectrometry.

Research interests

My duties are to maintain laboratory space and instrumentation, and to facilitate research, in the SEAPORT Carbon Labs, part of the Palaeoceanography and Palaeoclimate Research Group within Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. We are based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, and are focused on characterising complex mixtures of biologically derived organic matter using a variety of sophisticated analytical techniques.

Much of our research is focused on samples that are from sediments and rocks that are millions, sometimes billions, of years old, allowing our researching students and staff to understand ancient palaeoenvironments and extend our understanding of the evolution of the Earth.
