Postdoctoral work is a major career move, offering a period of focus and stability, which can lead on to lectureships and to significant positions away from academia.

We generally have around 25 postdoctoral researchers working with us at any one time, many of who undertake oceanographic research cruises and geological fieldwork in various parts of the globe.

Much of our research work is based within the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, but some activities are located within other departments, centres and institutes across the University and within other external organisations, which reflects the highly collaborative nature of our research.

We welcome enquiries from potential postdoctoral researchers who wish to write an independent research fellowship proposal to come and work with us. Funding is available to facilitate the proposal writing process. Potential funding options for independent postdoctoral fellowships include: Natural Environment Research Council, The Royal Society, European Union (Marie Curie) and The Leverhulme Trust. The Geological Society of London may publicise fellowships from a range of agencies.

The opportunity to conduct scientific work in the Arctic Ocean and visit Svalbard was one of the personal highlights of my postdoc position. My supervisors gave me all freedom and support to approach my project creatively and innovatively.
