Dr Gillian Kennedy and Dr Stuart Turnbull Dugarte join the department of Politics and International Relations

Published: 12 February 2020

Professor Pia Riggirozzi and the department are delighted to welcome colleagues Dr Kennedy and Dr Turnbull Dugarte who joined us this month from Kings College London.

Dr Gillian Kennedy

Dr. Gillian Kennedy works on the middle-east with a focus on immigration, diaspora networks and political mobilization. Her book ‘From Independence to Revolution: Egypt’s Islamists and the Contest for Power’, was published by Hurst and Oxford University Press and released in 2017.

Dr Kennedy said “the book was based on some really exciting fieldwork in Egypt just after the Arab Spring. Getting the views of Egyptian opposition groups expressed in my book was a definite career high”.

Regarding her new role within the department, Dr Kennedy looks forward to working with The Centre for Ethnography. “As one of the only established research centres in the U.K., this certainly appealed to me as it’s an interdisciplinary forum to explore this feature of research methods”.

Dr Stuart Turnbull Dugarte

Dr. Stuart Turnbull Dugarte works primarily on elections, public opinion and political parties. Stuart has published recent articles on the European Journal of Political Research, Electoral Studies, Research and Politics, Social Media + Society and West European Politics.

Later in 2020, his book; “Vox: The Return of the Spanish Radical Right” will be published by Routledge.

Of joining the department, he said “I was looking for a school where I thought I could make my intellectual home. I’m excited to work in a department that is passionate about helping me form my own unique research agenda”.
