Stuart J. Turnbull-Dugarte is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Political Science in the Department of Politics and International Relations.
Stuart joined the University of Southampton in 2020.
His main areas of research are focused on political party competition, electoral behaviour, and political psychology. Within this line of inquiry, he is interested in i) how political parties compete with each other, adapt their positions, and mobilise voters ii) the divergent preferences and political behaviour of LGBT individuals; and iii) populist parties, their supporters, and the impact they have on party systems.
He has published on these themes in a number of journals including, amongst others, the European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics and Electoral Studies. He also a new co-authored book currently under contract (Routledge) entitled “VOX: The Rise of the Spanish Radical Right”.
Prior to taking up his lectureship, Stuart read for his PhD in Political Science at King’s College London. During 2018-19, he was also a Visiting Scholar at the Juan March Institute (Universidad Carlos III) in Madrid, and in 2017-18 he was an Adam Smith Fellow at the Mercatus Center (George Mason University).
His thesis “Politics constrained: The political consequences of the financial crisis and EU economic intervention in Western Europe” researched the political impact of the EU's fiscal monitoring processes and bailout mechanisms on party competition and electoral behaviour in EMU member states. His doctoral training was financed via a scholarship from the UK’s Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC).
