Adjusting to Life Changes: Do our Values Change?

Anat Bardi, Royal Holloway

University of London

Do values change as part of adjusting to life changes? Values convey what is important to people in their life and they are usually stable. However, when people have to adjust to new situations in life values may change to become more suitable to the new life situation. But what if the life change was chosen by the person? People are likely to make choices partly based on their values, so their values may fit the new life situation already at its onset leaving little need for change. The talk will present four longitudinal studies that vary in population and types of life changes showing small but meaningful value change as a function of the magnitude of the life change.
