Office of Love: The Significance of the Relationships in the Workplace

Michelle A. Luke
Southampton Management School, University of Southampton, UK

Three studies examine the quality of relationships in the workplace. Study 1 establishes that leaders and colleagues possess the characteristics of an attachment figure, such that leaders and colleagues provide the following functions: safe haven, secure base, emotional connection, and impact of death. Studies 2 and 3 examine how the quality of relationships with leaders and colleagues affect individual workplace behaviour (organisational deviance, proactive behaviour) and attitudes toward the organisation. In particular, these studies establish that positive emotions associated with leaders and colleagues are accompanied by positive attitudes and behaviours. Thus, the quality of relationships with leaders and colleagues has important consequences for the individual and organisation.
