WSTNet Web Science Summer School comes to Southampton
The WSI was delighted to host this year’s annual WSTNet Web Science Summer School, co-ordinated by Professor Les Carr and Dr Mark Weal. WWSSS’19 addressed the interdisciplinary theme of “Web Science and AI for Future Society” through a broad range of sessions covering Digital Futures, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, ethics for researchers, data visualisation and the Future of AI.
The WSTNet Web Science Summer School is an annual event and is intended for researchers starting out in Web Science, and for professionals who wish to know more about this increasingly important topic.
Masters and PhD students and early career researchers participated in tutorials, workshops and lectures, as well as working on group projects using Open Streetmap data.
Three keynote talks were given by Professor Susan Halford ( Bristol University) , JP Rangaswami (Web Science Trust) and Professor Dame Wendy Hall (University of Southampton) .
The programme incorporated a visit to the Data Observatory at the Data Science Institute, Imperial College London, and an Ethics workshop led by the Office for National Statistics. Participants also enjoyed a poster session and networking reception, and a walking tour of medieval Southampton.
