Hi, I'm Brassington Mathe and I studied Engineering Foundation Year within Engineering and the Environment at the University of Southampton.

The knowledge and skills I gained from my Foundation Year were invaluable.

Signing up for a Foundation Year is often a good idea for people returning to study after working. Auto electrician Brassington Mathe had been out of education for some years before he decided to start an undergraduate course in Electrical Engineering at Southampton.  He has found his experience on the Engineering Foundation Year extremely useful before progressing on to his degree.

"I have always had a passion for engineering," he explains. "Electrical engineering was the logical choice for me and I chose Southampton for its reputation in the subject.  The knowledge and skills I gained from my Foundation Year were invaluable, along with the help and support I got from my lecturers and tutors."

During his first year, Brassington joined the university boxing club: "It's great to meet new people and make friends outside classes." He advises people considering returning to study just to go for it. "Many people find engineering challenging but it is also very interesting and worthwhile. Go for it, it will be an enjoyable experience."
