AMT has again the pleasure of hosting an international visiting scholar. We are welcoming Dr Tomáš Dvořák, an assistant professor and vice-dean for research at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) and a research associate at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He studied philosophy, art history, media studies and sociology at Charles University in Prague and The Graduate Center, City University of New York.

Dvořák’s research focuses on philosophy and history of media and philosophy and history of science and the interrelations of these fields, especially media archaeology of science and knowledge. His visit is organised in the context of a mobility fellowship funded by the Czech partners and is part of a longer-term collaboration between FAMU and Winchester School of Art.

During his fellowship he will be researching the links between operational images and photographic practices and discourses through works of artists-writers, namely Allan Sekula, Harun Farocki and Trevor Paglen. He has authored or co-authored several books in Czech: Epistemology of (New) Media (NAMU 2018), Photography, Sculpture, Object (NAMU 2017), Temporality of (New) Media (NAMU 2016), Contemporary Approaches in Historical Epistemology (Filosofia 2013), Chapters from the History and Theory of Media (AVU 2010), Waste Management: Texts, Images and Sounds of Recent History (Filosofia 2009).
