Come and talk to our advisers

Our Ask the Adviser appointments are 15 minute conversations to chat about anything careers related. We may then refer you to appropriate resources or activities that we offer, including a 45 minute careers appointment or our range of Design Your Future workshops.

Appointments are available in person (at Highfield Campus, the Sir James Matthews Building and Winchester School of Art) and online (through Microsoft Teams).

Who is eligible for an Ask the Adviser appointment?

This service is available to all current students at the University of Southampton and to alumni for up to five years after graduation.

What can I discuss in an Ask the Adviser appointment?

You can use our Ask the Adviser appointments to discuss anything careers related. Topics can include:

  • Career options/planning and next steps
  • Feedback on a document such as a CV, covering letter or personal statement. Please ensure you upload a copy of your document when booking.
  • Interview/Assessment Centre/Online Test preparation
  • Finding opportunities, including internships and placements
  • Career options related to changing your course
  • Postgraduate study

When can I have an appointment?

We have appointments available Monday to Friday 10:00-16:00. Please note that during vacation periods these times may change. Please see MyCareer for available appointments.

Where should I go for an appointment in person?

  • For appointments at Highfield Campus, please use the 'Self check-in' option when you arrive at Building 37 in the Student Hub (to the left of the Building 37 atrium).
  • For appointments at the Sir James Matthews Building (in Southampton city centre), please go to the Student Hub which is on the left as you go through the main building entrance.
  • For appointments at Winchester School of Art, please go to the WSA Cafe.

How do I join an online appointment?

There are two ways to join your online appointment:

  • When you book the appointment you will receive a confirmation email and calendar notification which both contain the meeting link to join the session on MyCareer. Click on this link and log into MyCareer, then click on 'Join meeting' a few minutes before your appointment start time.
  • Alternatively, log into MyCareer and click on the ‘Appointments’ icon on the homepage. Select the appointment and then click on ‘Join meeting’ a few minutes before your appointment start time.

Graduates:

  • You will need to have a graduate profile on MyCareer in order to book the appointment so please register in the Graduate section of the MyCareer homepage first. You do not need to have a Microsoft Teams account in order to access the meeting and can just follow the steps above to join the session.

Can I receive feedback via email?

We recommend that, wherever possible, students and graduates receive support through an appointment online or in person, as this allows you to have a discussion with the adviser. If, however, you feel that written feedback would be more suitable for you please let us know and we will arrange an appointment for written advice instead.

How do I find my appointment notes?

After your appointment, your adviser will leave notes on your MyCareer profile about what was discussed. Please see our Appointment Notes Guide for instructions on how to access these through MyCareer.
