Talk to an adviser

Come and talk to our advisers

Our Ask the Adviser appointments (formerly called 'Drop-in Service') are 10 minute conversations to chat about anything careers related. We may then refer you to appropriate resources or activities that we offer, including a 45 minute careers appointment or our range of Design Your Future workshops.

Appointments are available in person (at Highfield Campus and Winchester School of Art) and online (through Microsoft Teams). All appointments currently available to book on MyCareer are taking place online.  If you would prefer an in-person appointment, please contact us and we will arrange this for you.

Before arranging an Ask the Adviser appointment, we strongly recommend you make use of the UoS Career Hub resources, which include an automated CV checker tool and an Interview 360 tool for instant feedback on interview technique.

Who is eligible for an Ask the Adviser appointment?

This service is available to all current students at the University of Southampton and to alumni for up to five years after graduation.

When can I have an appointment?

We have appointments available Monday to Friday 10:00-16:00.

Where should I go for an appointment in person?

  • For appointments at Highfield Campus, please use the 'Self check-in' option when you arrive at Building 37 in the Student Hub (to the left of the Building 37 atrium).
  • For appointments at Winchester School of Art, please go to the WSA Cafe.

How will the adviser contact me for an online appointment?

Students:

  • Microsoft Teams is accessible through SUSSED, or through the free Microsoft Teams app which you can download for your smartphone or tablet from your device's app store.
  • Please ensure that you are logged into Microsoft Teams using your university email address at the start of your chosen appointment time, ready to accept our adviser's call. You do not need to do anything else once logged in, please just wait for the adviser to contact you.

Graduates:

  • You will need to have a graduate profile on MyCareer in order to book the appointment so please register in the Graduate section of the MyCareer homepage.
  • Please see the details in this Microsoft Teams Guide for how to access the appointment on the day. You do not need to have a Microsoft Teams account.
  • Before the appointment start time the adviser will send you a meeting invite using the email address you have used to register on MyCareer. Please accept this meeting request and then click on ‘Join Microsoft Teams Meeting’ in the meeting invite. If you do not receive the Teams invite, please check your junk folders in case it has been incorrectly filtered.

Can I receive feedback via email?

We recommend that, wherever possible, students and graduates receive support through an appointment online or in person, as this allows you to have a discussion with the adviser. If, however, you feel that written feedback would be more suitable for you please let us know and we will arrange an appointment for written advice instead.

How do I find my appointment notes?

After your appointment, your adviser will leave notes on your MyCareer profile about what was discussed. Please see our Appointment Notes Guide for instructions on how to access these through MyCareer.
