Come and talk to our advisers

Want to speak to someone?

Our Ask the Adviser appointments (formerly called 'Drop-in Service') are 10 minute conversations with one of our advisers to assess how we can meet your needs. We may then refer you to appropriate resources or activities that we offer (including a 45 minute careers appointment).

Appointments are currently taking place in person (at Highfield Campus and Winchester School of Art) and online (through Microsoft Teams). Microsoft Teams is accessible through SUSSED, or through the free Microsoft Teams app which you can download for your smartphone or tablet from your device's app store. In addition to active students, we are pleased to offer this service to all alumni of the University of Southampton for up to five years after graduation.

Topics we can help you with in an Ask the Adviser appointment include:

- Career options/planning and next steps

- Feedback on a document e.g. CV, covering letter (please ensure you upload a copy of your document when booking)

- Interview/Assessment Centre/Online Test preparation

- Finding opportunities, including internships and placements

- Career options related to changing your course

- Postgraduate study

If you have questions about the content of your course, or if you are considering a change in your course of study, we recommend also contacting your faculty. Please note that we are unable to answer questions relating to visas or check employment contracts in our Ask the Adviser appointments. Questions relating to visas can be answered by the Visa and Immigration Team. If you have questions relating to employment contracts, you may wish to contact Citizens' Advice, or make use of the resources on the ACAS website.

Before arranging an Ask the Adviser appointment, we strongly recommend that you make use of the resources on the UoS Career Hub if you have not already done so, which provides an automated CV checker tool which you can use to gain feedback on your CV independently, and the Interview 360 tool which can help you practise for interview questions and improve your technique.

We recommend that, wherever possible, students and graduates receive support through an appointment online or in person, as this allows you to have a discussion with the adviser about your situation. If, however, you feel that written feedback would be more suitable for you please let us know and we will arrange an appointment for written advice instead.

Please see the sections below for more information. If you have any other questions regarding our appointments, please feel free to contact us at or 023 8059 3501. We are available Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:00, and we will answer your query as quickly as we can.

How will the adviser contact me?

After booking an appointment, you will receive an automated email notification from MyCareer, confirming your appointment date and time.

Appointments in person:

Please arrive at the appointment location in good time for the start of the session. If your appointment is at Highfield Campus, please use the 'Self check-in' option when you arrive at Building 37.  If your appointment is at Winchester School of Art, please go to the WSA Cafe and your appointment will take place there.

Appointments online:

Students: Please ensure that you are logged into Microsoft Teams using your university email address at the start of your chosen appointment time, ready to accept our adviser's call. You do not need to do anything else once logged in, please just wait for the adviser to contact you.

Graduates: You will need to have a graduate profile on MyCareer in order to book the appointment so please register in the Graduate section of the MyCareer homepage if you have not already done so. Please see the details in this Microsoft Teams guide for how to access the appointment on the day. You do not need to have a Microsoft Teams account. A few minutes before the appointment start time the adviser will send you a meeting invite using the email address you have used to register on MyCareer. Please accept this meeting request and then click on ‘Join Microsoft Teams Meeting’ in the meeting invite. If you do not receive the Teams invite, please check your junk folders in case it has been incorrectly filtered.

How do I find my appointment notes?

After your appointment, your adviser will leave notes on your MyCareer profile about what was discussed. Please see our Appointment Notes Guide for instructions on how to access these through MyCareer.

I don't have a Microsoft Teams account

Students: University of Southampton students have access to Teams through SUSSED, or through the free Teams app for tablet/phone, using their university email address and password. Use these credentials to log in at your chosen appointment time, and our adviser will invite you to a call.

Graduates: You do not need to have a Microsoft Teams account in order to have an appointment and can accept the adviser's meeting invite to use Teams as a guest user, regardless of whether you have a Microsoft account or not.  Please see the 'How will the adviser contact me?' section for further information.

If you encounter any issues using Teams, please contact us so that we can resolve the issue and make alternative arrangements if required.
