International applicants to some programmes are required to apply to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (FCO) Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) for clearance to study in the UK. ATAS is one of the UK government’s measures to prevent the spread of knowledge used in developing weapons of mass destruction and related technology.
