Information for international students

As an international student, you will be warmly welcomed to the University. Our aim is to ensure that your experience throughout your time at Southampton is a positive and rewarding one. We encourage all new international postgraduates to register for our Welcome Programme, specifically designed for our international students.

Through our free ‘Meet and Greet' service, we arrange to meet new international students from London Heathrow Airport on certain dates before the beginning of the academic year. Our representatives will be there to greet you and transport you directly to the University, in time for the Welcome Programme.

At the end of September we run a comprehensive International Students' Induction Programme. This introduces you to the University, providing a range of information and support on practical issues, from immigration to accommodation, and an opportunity to meet with fellow students.

Information for Students from the International Medical University, Malaysia (IMU) and University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD)

Each September the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton looks forward to welcoming students from the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia, and students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Brunei, who have successfully completed a five semester Advanced Diploma in Medical Science at IMU or have successfully completed the first 3 years of the BHSc Medicine programme at UBD. These students will enter the BM International Transfer programme and complete a 12 week module 'Introduction to Clinical Medicine in Southampton'. Following this they will follow the same curriculum as the BM5 students for the remainder of Year 4 and Year 5.

Southampton is located on the south coast of England and so is a warmer part of the country. It is easy to travel by train to London and has good access to Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Southampton airport has daily flights to UK cities and European cities such as Paris and Amsterdam. The city is well connected to transport links. The hospital is 30 minutes from Southampton International Airport, by car and 15 minutes from the Southampton Central Train Station, which is on the main line to London Waterloo (approximately 1 hour 10 minutes). It is fifteen miles to the historic city of Winchester and the New Forest as well as being close to the Solent for water sports. Southampton is a pleasant city with good sporting facilities, cinemas, theatres and shopping centres. All overseas students are guaranteed accommodation in halls of residence.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. It informs the allocation of Research England's annual quality-related research funding. In the latest REF exercise (REF2021) 82% of our research in Medicine was rated as "world leading" or "internationally excellent". We were recognised for translating our discoveries into real world benefits, with 100% of our research rated as either 3* or 4* for impact. Our research environment was rated internationally excellent.

Our curriculum is similar to yours and we hope you will find it easy to settle in. We plan four days of induction and orientation starting in mid-September before starting your Introduction to Clinical Medicine module. You will be allocated a personal academic tutor as well as a student from the year to support you.

Year 3 clinical attachments are mainly in Southampton but you may have to travel to nearby Portsmouth or Winchester. In the fourth and fifth years students are dispersed in clinical placements across hospital and community healthcare settings in the south of England. You are very much part of the clinical teams living and working in the various hospitals.

The UK Foundation Programme - guarantees you one year’s employment after graduating to enable you to obtain full registration with the General Medical Council as long as you fulfil the criteria of passing the Situational Judgement Test along with all other UK Final Year medical students, and passing Finals examinations.
