6 steps to getting money ready for university

- Use the Student Finance calculator to find out how much your might get for a maintenance loan plus any extra elements, for example, if you're disabled or have children. Note that Student Finance loans are available to medical students in the early year/s of their course
- Find out what help is available from the University of Southampton, such as the undergraduate bursary for students with a household income of less than £36,200. Once you're enrolled and on your course, you can also apply to the Living at Home Students' Commuter Fund or you might be eligible for the Care Leaver & Estranged Student Bursary
- Check out average living costs for a University of Southampton student. Every student has their own set of costs based on their individual needs, so we encourage you to create a personalised budget using our UoS budget sheet or this easy to use Student Cost of Living Calculator
- There will likely be a gap between the amount of funding you expect to receive and the amount you need. Give some thought to how you might fill that gap. Some students receive a regular contribution from their family. Others take up part-time work, or they might find a scholarship. Here's how to get money-ready for the University of Southampton
- If you plan to fund your course through Student Finance tuition and maintenance loans, apply as soon as you can. This ensures the funding will be in place when you start. The process can take 6+ weeks.
- Find out about the UoS undergraduate bursary for students with a low household income. Bursaries are awarded automatically as part of the Student Finance household income assessment process. There is no separate bursary application. Note: You can get a Student Finance household income assessment without taking a loan (if you're eligible for Student Finance, simply 'apply' for a maintenance loan and request £0)

- Once you've enrolled and started on your course, you'll be eligible to find 24/7 support from the Student Hub; it will be your go-to place for money questions, including 1:1 appointments and help with living costs
