Patrick Sturgis is Professor of Research Methodology in the Department of Social Statistics & Demography at the University of Southampton.

My research interests are in the areas of survey methodology, public opinion and political behaviour, science in society, and social mobility.

Patrick Sturgis is Professor of Research Methodology and Director of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM). He has a BA in Psychology from the University of Liverpool and a Master of Science and PhD in social psychology from the London School of Economics. His research interests are in the areas of survey methodology, statistical modelling, public opinion and political behaviour, public understanding of science and technology, social capital, and social mobility. He chairs the methodological advisory committee of the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (Understanding Society) and is past-President of the European Survey Research Association (ESRA, 2011-2015).

Research interests

My research interests are in the areas of public opinion and political behaviour, particularly with regard to social and political trust and social capital. I also have interests in processes of inter- and intra-generational social mobility and public attitudes towards and engagement with science and technology. Methodologically, my interests are in the areas of survey methodology and statistical modelling, with a particular focus on structural equation models and models for the analysis of repeated measures data.

I am director of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM). I chair the methodological advisory committee of the UK Household Longitudinal Survey (Understanding Society) and the Applied Quantitative Methods Network (AQMeN) and am vice-chair of the methodological advisory committee of the European Social Survey (ESS). I am chief academic advisor to the Wellcome Trust for the Wellcome Monitor and chair the British Polling Council/Market Research Society inquiry into the 2015 General Election polls.
