Dr Dave Newell is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Primary Care, Population Sciences and Medical Education at the University of Southampton and Director of Research at AECC University College in Bournemouth. Splitting his time between these two posts, his primary role at Southampton is the exploration of delivery of MSK services that interface between primary care and community based settings.
After studying Biological Sciences at University of Plymouth, Dr Newell went on to complete a PhD in molecular biology going on to teach degree level biochemistry early in his career. After senior academic posts at other Universities both in Australia and the UK he became Director of Research at the AECC University College in Bournemouth in 2012 and in 2017 added the role of Senior Research Fellow at Southampton
His interests include muscle physiology, patient reported outcomes and prognostic indicators with conservative MSK care and the impact of contextual factors within manual therapeutic encounters.
He has published extensively in areas of MSK related research and conservative approaches to MSK care, including the use of web based patient reported outcome methods to collect routine data during care for low back and neck pain patients. These are reflected in his recent grant applications.
