  • UEB noted a letter sent to Vice-Chancellors by Higher Education Minister Robert Halfon MP, urging continuing vigilance and action in relation to a rise in Antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents following events in the Middle East. The letter reinforced the Government’s support for academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law, but raised clear concerns around some specific incidents. UEB also heard that Universities UK (UUK) is closely monitoring the situation in discussion with members. We continue to encourage a truly inclusive community at Southampton that embodies the values and behaviours that unite us, and not divide us. We have made clear we will ensure that all members of our community feel safe and supported.
  • UEB noted the formal Schedule of Contribution consultation documents in respect of the proposed new contribution rates payable by members and employers resulting from the 2023 Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) actuarial valuation. This is subject to consultation with Universities UK, and the introduction of new, lower, contribution rates is expected from 1 January 2024.
  • UEB endorsed the 2023 Annual Report for the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, which provides an overview of the work undertaken in 2022-2023 to meet our commitment as signatories of the Researcher Development Concordat (RDC). Over the past year, the efforts have focussed on strengthening the foundations to deliver the RDC objectives and implementation plans. These included targeted investment in key staff roles across the pipeline of researcher career development; investment in Post-Doctoral Fellowships; establishing a wide range of resources and regular training opportunities for staff at all levels and contribution to the development and implementation of major strategic projects to address workforce casualisation, wellbeing, career pathways and workload principles. UEB welcomed the report and the excellent progress that is being made.
  • UEB heard that a number of UEB members had attended a launch event the previous day for the new Class Ceiling photography exhibition at our John Hansard Gallery, showcasing the working-class experiences of a range of students, staff and alumni of the University. Produced and curated by the University’s Social Mobility Network, it offers a glimpse into the lived experiences of its contributors, celebrating who they are and what they bring to the institution and our city.  Opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 11:00 to 17:00 through to 3 February 2024.
  • Finally, there was the regular review of the University Risk Register.
