Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Summarise major trends in demographic change, including population ageing, in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
• You will have also developed your skills in summarising and critically discussing literature and your written communication skills through the preparation of assessed coursework.
• Demonstrate understanding of challenges to formal and informal support to older people in the broader Southeast Asian context, as well as in the Chinese and Indian context.
• Critically discuss key aspects of older people’s wellbeing (physical, psychological, financial) in China, South Asia (in particular India), and Southeast Asia.

The module will include online lectures on: Population ageing in Asia; Socio-demographic changes in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia; Living arrangement of older people in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia; Migration, development and ageing in China, South Asia and South-east Asia; Family support and care for and by older people in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia; Population Ageing in India; Health and health inequalities in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia; Social Security for health care and its reform in China, and Social protection in China, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching methods for this module include online audio-recorded lectures which are accessible to students via Blackboard, reading material which is provided online and the students' key textbooks, and trigger questions as part of the recordings which allow staff to pose questions in order to teach more complex concepts in-depth.

The learning activities include listening to online audio-recorded lectures, reflection on trigger questions (and communication with the module convenor) and independent study.
