Our student accommodation guarantee

Most students starting at the University will have guaranteed accommodation, including all new undergraduates.

We guarantee to offer you a room for 1 person in your first year if you’re:

  • a new undergraduate starting your first year
  • aged 16 or 17 when you join us

Guaranteed accommodation for students from outside the UK

We guarantee to offer accommodation for:

  • international undergraduate students (for all the years you’re studying with us)
  • international postgraduate students (for your first year of study)
  • students on some study abroad and exchange programmes (please contact us to check if your programme is included)
  • a pre-sessional English student

How to get your guaranteed accommodation offer

If you’re a new student, you must:

  • make Southampton your firm or insurance choice of university
  • apply for accommodation by 1 August in the year your course will begin
  • accept your accommodation offer within the timeframe we give you, which is usually 4 days after the offer is made

You can find out more about the specific dates on our application page.

How to apply for accommodation

If you do not qualify for guaranteed accommodation

We may have rooms available even if you do not qualify for guaranteed accommodation. We encourage you to apply for halls of residence if you’re:

  • a postgraduate student from the UK, EU or Channel Islands
  • a visiting or exchange student on a programme without guaranteed accommodation
  • a couple or family who wants larger accommodation
  • under 16 when you start at the University and need to live with your guardian
  • a current student and you want to live in halls beyond your first year
