Who is guaranteed accommodation
You may not be guaranteed accommodation when you apply for a place in our halls of residence. We offer guaranteed accommodation based on a number of factors, including your level of study and when you apply.

How we allocate accommodation
We’ll use the information you give in your application to help us allocate your accommodation. It is not always possible to give you the type of accommodation you have chosen.
Here's what will happen next:
- We’ll use your student ID to check if you have met the conditions of your study offer (for example, the A-level results or degree award required). Your accommodation offer is dependent on you meeting the conditions of your study offer.
- We send accommodation offers by email. Your offer will include information about your hall of residence. Your exact room details (for example your room number and floor) will be given to you when you arrive at the start of term.
- You must reply before the deadline included in the email. The offer will be cancelled if you do not respond within that time.
- You must set up a payment method for your fees when you accept your accommodation offer. This should be a recurring credit or debit card payment.
Making a prepayment when you accept your accommodation offer
You'll need to make a prepayment if you're a new or returning postgraduate student, or an undergraduate student staying in halls for another year.
This prepayment will be £150 for undergraduate students and £350 for postgraduate students. We'll refund this prepayment if you cancel your room by 1 July or 1 September for new postgraduates. Otherwise, it will be deducted from your first instalment of accommodation fees.
If you do not make your prepayment when you accept your accommodation offer, your offer will be withdrawn.
How we’ll store and use your data
Our privacy notice explains how we’ll store and use any personal information included in your application or gathered during our communication with you.
Once you accept your accommodation offer we may use your email address to contact you about events and opportunities in halls across the year.
When and how we can terminate our agreement
We may withdraw the offer of accommodation before your contract begins if:
- you have not paid your hall fees
- we feel that your behaviour or actions may not be conducive to a hall of residence environment (for example, if you have been served a Notice to Quit halls accommodation because of a breach of discipline)

We follow the UUK code of practice
The University of Southampton is signed up to and fully supports the Accommodation Code of Practice. This means we commit to providing you with a safe and comfortable living environment, so that you can experience an enjoyable and successful student life. We recommend that you read the code before joining us in our halls of residence. The code covers the points described below.
A healthy and safe environment
We hold welcome talks and health and safety meetings throughout the year.
Halls are maintained throughout the year to make sure they meet health and safety requirements. We aim to give you 7 days notice if we need access to your room.
Timely repairs and maintenance
Urgent repair requests can be reported 24 hours a day by calling our helpline or visiting our reception teams.
You can report and track less urgent problems using our online maintenance system.
A clean, pleasant living environment
We regularly clean our communal areas.
We try to create a sense of community in our halls. We have student committees in each hall that help us run social and support activities.
A formal, contractual relationship with your landlord
Your contract (stored in your accommodation account) and Halls Regulations explain what we’ll provide as your landlord. They also explain what’s expected from you as a resident.
We advise you to read your contract before accepting your accommodation offer. Your contract is a legally binding document.
Access to health and wellbeing services
You can contact the Residences Team for help 24 hours a day by calling 023 8059 5777. If we cannot help you, we’ll try and connect you with someone who can.
We’ll give you information about how to register with a doctor when you arrive at University.
A living environment, free from anti-social behaviour
We collaborate with the Students’ Union to encourage a sense of community for you and your neighbours.
