Lecturer

Sue Toward is a lecturer in Health Sciences, University of Southampton. She started her career as an NHS National Management Trainee in the West Country. After completing the scheme Sue worked in planning / commissioning and operational management in the community mental health and acute sectors. In 1988 Sue took up her first University of Southampton appointment of Research Fellow at the Institute for Health Policy Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences). In 1991 she joined the then College of Nursing and Midwifery as Management Development Facilitator. Her current role in Health Sciences involves teaching policy, leadership and management at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
My role is focused on developing health and social care professionals’ understanding of the way in which policy underpins practice and provides context and direction for leadership at all levels. I have a background in NHS general management and health policy analysis’
Sue has wide ranging interests which include the design and leadership of policy teaching, the development of practitioners’ critical thinking and critical self-reflection skills and public health. She has qualifications in counselling skills and coaching and is a member of the University’s internal coaching network.
