Lecturer in Respiratory Physiology University Placement Coordinator (Healthcare Science)

Dr Sally Sampson is a senior teaching fellow on the B.Sc. (Hons) Cardiac Physiology (Healthcare Science) degree programme within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton.

Sally has had a long career as a respiratory physiologist, with extensive experience in both clinical and research settings. She has familiarity of both paediatric and adult testing, and is a national examiner. Sally joined the Faculty in 2015, whilst maintaining a clinical role at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital until the beginning of 2020.

Sally is the University Placement Coordinator for the B.Sc.(Hons) Cardiac Physiology (Healthcare Science) programme, managing placements for students in all year groups across the UK. She also liaises with potential placement centres in order to further develop placement capacity. In addition, she is a personal tutor to students in Years 1,2 and 3 and is involved with student selection processes.

Sally is a member of both the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology, and the Registration Council of Clinical Physiologists, and is an examiner at national exams, as well as acting as an external examiner for the Healthcare Science degree programme at St George’s, University of London.

Sally leads respiratory and sleep teaching in HPRS 1034 and 1035 modules (Scientific Basis of Cardiovascular and Respiratory and Sleep Parts 1 and 2).

HPRS 1023: Role of Respiratory and Sleep physiologists, introduction to respiratory anatomy and physiology, introduction to respiratory function testing (spirometry), introduction to normal sleep and introduction to sleep monitoring (pulse oximetry)

HPRS 1024: Reference values, practical spirometry testing, spot check oximetry, spirometry interpretation, respiratory pathologies, sleep disorders

Sally also contributes to a Year 2 module – public health aspects of cardiovascular disease and is responsible for work based learning modules across all year groups.
