Dr Louise Palmour is a SCDTP Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

Prior to joining as a Research Fellow, I completed an ESRC-funded PhD in Applied Linguistics (2020) and a MA in Applied Linguistics (2013) at University of Southampton. Before this, I studied for a BA in Russian Studies (2010) at University of Nottingham. Since completing my BA and CELTA, I have also worked as an English teacher and English for Academic Purposes practitioner for over ten years in colleges and universities in the UK and Russia.

My doctoral research investigated decision making in oral presentation assessment tasks on English for Academic Purposes programmes. Alongside my doctorate, I assisted on a British Council ELTRA project entitled  ‘Oral skills development in pre-sessional EAP classes and student transition to academic disciplines’. As part of this project, I co-authored a good practice guide on facilitating oracy skills development for practitioners in Higher Education.

At Southampton, I am part of the teaching teams on UG and PGT modules on Language Assessment, English-Medium Education and Research and Enquiry in Applied Linguistics.

Research interests

My research interests include oracy development and assessment in English Language Teaching, English for Academic Purposes and English Medium Education contexts. I am particularly interested in qualitative approaches to investigating multimodal language assessment, socio-linguistic fairness and justice issues in English-medium education, and teacher assessor and student assessee decision-making processes. Connected to this, I have ongoing interest in Intercultural Communication and English as a Lingua Franca research perspectives and their application to teaching and wider communication contexts.

Research projects

Principal Investigator on UKRI-funded postdoctoral project: ‘Assessing Academic Oral Presentations in English Medium Education: Navigating Linguistic and Social Justice Implications of Decision Making’.
