Dr Richard Kiely is a Reader in TESOL Applied Linguistics in Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

Richard Kiely is interested in language teacher learning from a sociocultural theory (SCT) perspective: understanding how the TESOL imagination is furnished and refurbished in teacher education courses and through work. The essential features of the language curriculum are forged in large part in classroom interaction, with the contribution of the teacher as the major determinant.

In addition to teacher learning, he has undertaken research, published and supervised PhDs in:

Language programme evaluation
Language testing and assessment
Identity in language learning and teaching
Curriculum design and materials development in ELT
The EAP curriculum

He has a BA in French and English from the National University of Ireland at Cork, an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex, and a PhD in language programme evaluation from the University of Warwick. He has previously worked at the University of St Mark and St John, the University of Bristol, the University of Chichester, and the University of West London in the UK. He also has extensive experience as a teacher, teacher-trainer and curriculum developer in English as a second language/ TESOL contexts: France, Poland, Hungary, Greece, Mexico, Tanzania, South Africa, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Oman and Zambia.
