Ellie Atayee-Bennett is a postgraduate research student at the University of Southampton within the department of sociology.

My research explores the sociology of religion and veganism within the context of late modern Britain, focusing specifically on experience and identity construction among Jewish, Christian, and Muslim vegans.

Ellie began studying at the University of Southampton in 2014, first completing a BSc in Sociology and Anthropology before being awarded a 1 + 3 studentship with the South Coast DTP. She then went on to study an MSc in Social Research Methods and is now working full-time on her PhD. During this time, she also became a mum to a little girl and a little boy, as well as founding and organising each Southampton Vegan Festival.

Her PhD research topic is in part inspired by her own experiences. As a vegan and Muslim, she has always found veganism to be a difficult and poorly understood topic amongst religious communities. By exploring the experiences of other vegans who identify either as Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, she hopes to build knowledge in this area in order to encourage improved dialogue and understanding of contemporary issues, such as veganism, amongst faith groups.

Research interests

Ellie’s research interests primarily include the sociology of religion, veganism, identity construction, and late modernity.
