Transport for Students

We are very pleased to offer a range of subsidied transport options and facilities to assist Winchester School of Art (WSA) students in accessing facilities and amenities in both Winchester and Southampton.

Support for Students

The University of Southampton has adequate halls accommodation in Winchester (Erasmus Park and Riverside Way) to accommodate WSA students. Any WSA students who choose to live in University accommodation in Southampton will receive a bus pass for the Unilink bus service included in their hall fees. However, Unilink does not have a bus service between Southampton and Winchester, so students living in University accommodation in Winchester (Erasmus Park and Riverside Way) will receive a reduction in their hall fees to assist them in using the bus or train on the occasions they need to visit Southampton. For 2019-20 this reduction is approximately £290.

All WSA students can purchase a Bluestar bus pass which has been discounted by Bluestar and subsidised by the Faculty. A termly (90-day) bus pass can be purchased from the Unilink Office, located above the Students Union shop on Highfield campus, for £136.

For supplementary ad-hoc journeys there is a free shuttlebus service for WSA students between the Highfield and Avenue Campus, Southampton, and the Winchester campus, helping WSA students make the most of everything that Southampton has to offer. The bus operates a regular service during term-time and also stops at Erasmus Park/Riverside Way in the evening. Full details can be found on the WSA Shuttle Bus tab below.

Cleaning of the Bus

All touch points are cleaned after the vehicle is used, vehicles are cleaned every night and sprayed with Viricidal spray (a specialised disinfectant to combat Coronavirus etc).

Social Distancing

The Bus service provider has removed social distancing as per the government guidance, so the vehicle is being used to full capacity. Please follow the University’s advice to wear a face covering when you’re inside a shared University building, on public transport, or in crowded spaces outdoors. Anti-bacterial Gel is available on the vehicle.

Students are required to present a valid Student Card to travel. The bus is wheelchair accessible.

1.  Can I use the shuttlebus even though I am not a WSA Student?

Yes, the Shuttlebus can be used by Students from other Faculties for the purpose of getting to WSA to utilise the facilities on that campus on an adhoc basis, for example attending a guest lecture, group or activity.   Students need to present their ID cards to be able to gain access to the bus.

The bus cannot be used for commuting purposes i.e. to get to a placement at the hospital or for just generally heading into Winchester for example.

2.  I am a member of staff, can I use the Shuttlebus to get to WSA for a meeting?

Yes, the use of the shuttlebus to go to WSA for meetings or adhoc journeys for staff members if permitted, again staff need to take their ID cards to gain access to the bus.

3.  I am a member of staff who lives in Winchester but works in Highfield (or vice versa), can I use the bus to commute to and from my place of work?

Staff may use the WSA Shuttlebus if they have teaching or business to attend to at WSA during the working day and vice-versa, but under no circumstances are staff permitted to use the Shuttlebus for the purpose of commuting to and from work. Unfortunately this is not permitted as it is not the purpose for which the Faculty is funding the bus, and free travel to and from work, which is a taxable benefit, is not something which the University provides for its employees.

4.  Wifi Password

The Wifi password should be on a poster displayed on the Shuttlebus.

5.  Other methods of transport

The blue star number 1 service runs between Highfield and WSA.  WSA Students are eligible for subsidised passes but need to contact the Blue Star bus office directly.  Details can be found here:
