Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Explain and use aspects of reactivity including resonance, conjugation, acidity, basicity, aromaticity, nucleophilicity and leaving group ability.
- Draw and explain structural features in organic molecules.
- Draw reaction mechanisms including addition to alkenes, electrophilic aromatic substitutions and nucleophilic substitutions
- Name organic molecules and functional groups

Syllabus
Structural organic chemistry: Naming and drawing organic molecules and functional groups; IR spectroscopy; Atomic and molecular orbitals; Hybridisation; Isomerism in unsaturated molecules; Isomerism at saturated carbon including optical activity; Conformational Analysis – Linear; Conformational analysis – cyclic
Reactions in organic chemistry: Drawing reaction mechanisms; Resonance and conjugation; Inductive effects; Acidity and carbon acids; Nitrogen acids and bases; Aromaticity and benzene; Addition to alkenes; Electrophilic aromatic substitution; Heterocycles; Nucleophilic substitution at saturated carbon; Leaving group ability; Nucleophilicity; SN1 and SN2 reaction mechanisms.
