English language requirements
All courses at the University of Southampton are taught in English. To study here, you must show that your English language proficiency meets our requirements.
This page explains the different ways you can do this.
Each course has its own English language proficiency requirement, expressed as an English language band (A to I) and its International English Language Testing System (IELTS) equivalent. Your offer letter will tell you which band you need to meet.
We will consider your full application and all your supporting documents when we assess your English language proficiency.
We may ask for additional evidence if we have any concerns about your standard of English.
If you're from a majority English-speaking country
If you are from a majority English-speaking country you do not need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency.
However, you’ll need to meet our minimum academic standard of English.
This is usually:
- GCSE English Language at grade 4 or C (or equivalent)
Some courses require a higher level. To find the minimum English language requirement for your course, check the course page entry requirements.
