Film studies

A student leaning over the back of his seat in a cinema as a film plays in the background, smiling at the camera.
Study film from a wide variety of perspectives: as art, as a business, and as a cultural and historical artefact. From the earliest projected images to the present day, you'll cover cinema from Hollywood, Europe and the rest of the world.

Join a friendly community of experts and learn about topics like film history, television, cultural studies, and gender studies, from all around the world. Whether you're advanced in the field or looking for an introduction to film studies, we'll help you build on your passion for film. You'll explore a range of genres, from Hollywood classics and new world cinema, to horror, science fiction, documentary and animation.

People

I am a feminist film and media studies scholar with particular interests in women filmmakers, equality and diversity in the film and television industries, celebrity culture, adaptation, and reception discourses.
I'm interested in British and European films which travel across borders: what themes, stories, and stars these films focus on, who watches them and why, and how they're produced, funded and distributed.
Lecturer B
I am primarily a theorist and historian of film music and film sound, but with a strong interdisciplinary interest in aesthetics and theory, as well as culture beyond film.
Professor of Film & Film Music
