Module overview

From aircraft engines and renewable energy systems to heating technologies and high-performance vehicles, the movement of energy and fluids lies at the heart of modern engineering. This module introduces the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics that enable engineers to understand, analyse and improve these systems. You will explore how energy is transferred and transformed, how fluids behave in motion, and how engineers use these principles to model and solve practical engineering problems. Along the way, you will develop the quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills needed to evaluate the performance of engineering systems and make informed design decisions. By the end of the module, you will have a solid understanding of the physical principles governing energy and fluid flow, providing an essential foundation for later study in thermal sciences, fluid mechanics, energy engineering and many other engineering disciplines.
