Module overview

Whether reducing aircraft engine noise, improving vehicle refinement or designing quieter industrial equipment, understanding how airflow generates sound is essential for many areas of modern engineering. This module explores the fascinating interaction between fluid mechanics and acoustics, providing the knowledge needed to analyse and predict aerodynamic noise. You will investigate the physical mechanisms responsible for aerodynamic sound generation and study how sound propagates through moving fluids. By bringing together concepts from fluid mechanics and acoustics, you will develop a deeper understanding of the complex interactions that influence the noise produced by high-speed flows. Throughout the module, you will strengthen your analytical and modelling skills while learning how engineers predict and reduce unwanted noise in practical engineering systems. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse aeroacoustic phenomena across a wide range of engineering applications, from aerospace and automotive engineering to industrial processes and consumer products, equipping you with specialist knowledge that is increasingly important in modern engineering design.
