Module overview

Innovation is essential to maintaining security, resilience and technological advantage in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. This module explores how engineers contribute to innovation within the defence and security sector, developing technologies and capabilities that address emerging threats while balancing technical excellence with ethical, societal and policy considerations. You will examine the processes that drive innovation, from research and technology development to collaboration between government, industry and academia. Through a series of real-world case studies delivered by leading academics and industrial experts, you will explore topics including innovation policy, intellectual property, responsible research, ethics, diversity, stakeholder engagement and collaborative working. Along the way, you will develop a broader understanding of how successful engineering innovation depends on both technical expertise and effective leadership within complex organisational environments. By the end of the module, you will understand the wider innovation ecosystem that supports defence and security engineering and be well prepared to undertake research and technology development within multidisciplinary environments. The module provides an important foundation for your subsequent research activities and future leadership roles in advanced engineering and innovation.
