Module overview

Successful engineering products depend on the effective integration of design, materials and manufacturing. This module explores how manufacturing processes influence product performance, quality, cost and sustainability, helping you understand how engineers translate designs into practical, manufacturable components. You will investigate a wide range of manufacturing technologies, including casting, forming, machining, welding, additive manufacturing and polymer and composite processing. As you do this, you will develop an understanding of how selected materials, manufacturing methods and process economics interact to influence engineering decisions. Using examples drawn from across aerospace, automotive and maritime engineering, you will strengthen your ability to select appropriate manufacturing routes for a variety of engineering applications. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate manufacturing processes and their outcomes from technical, economic and sustainability perspectives, providing valuable skills for engineering design, manufacturing and product development.
