Module overview

Successful mechanical engineers combine technical knowledge with professional judgement, creativity and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems. This module complements and builds on your first-year technical studies by developing the engineering mindset, professional skills and analytical approach needed to tackle real-world engineering challenges throughout your degree and career. You will explore the role of the professional mechanical engineer, developing reflective practice and learning how to identify, evaluate and build the technical and employability skills needed for lifelong professional development. Through a series of engineering case studies, you will learn how engineers frame complex problems, apply scientific principles and use simplified analytical models to generate innovative and practical solutions. Through this, you will strengthen your technical reasoning, engineering judgement and communication skills while gaining confidence in applying engineering analysis to realistic mechanical systems. By the end of the module, you will have developed the professional and analytical capabilities needed to approach mechanical engineering problems with confidence, providing a strong foundation for more advanced design, analysis and project work throughout your degree.
